Present-bias, quasi-hyperbolic discounting, and fixed costs

چکیده
Article history: Received 28 January 2008 Available online xxxx JEL classification: C91 D03 D90 In this paper we elicit preferences for money–time pairs via experimental techniques. We estimate a general specification of discounting that nests exponential and hyperbolic discounting, as well as various forms of present bias, including quasi-hyperbolic discounting. We find that discount rates are high and decline with both delay and amount, as most of the previous literature. We also find clear evidence for present bias. When identifying the form of the present bias, little evidence for quasi-hyperbolic discounting is found. The data strongly favor instead a specification with a small present bias in the form of a fixed cost, of the order of $4 on average across subjects. With such a fixed cost the curvature of discounting is imprecisely estimated and both exponential and hyperbolic discounting cannot be rejected for several subjects. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Axiomatization and Measurement of Quasi-hyperbolic Discounting*
This article provides an axiomatic characterization of quasi-hyperbolic discounting and a more general class of semi-hyperbolic preferences. We impose consistency restrictions directly on the intertemporal trade-offs by relying on what we call ‘‘annuity compensations.’’ Our axiomatization leads naturally to an experimental design that disentangles discounting from the elasticity of intertempora...
متن کاملAllais Meets Strotz: Remarks on the Relation between Present Bias and the Certainty Effect
The paper establishes a tight relation between non-standard behaviors in the domains of risk and time by considering a decision maker with non-expected utility preferences who believes that only present consumption is certain while any future consumption is uncertain. We provide the rst complete characterization of the two-way relations between i) certainty e ect and present bias, and, ii) comm...
متن کاملEstimating Discount Factors within a Random Utility Theoretic Framework
Choices involving tradeo¤s of bene ts and costs over time are pervasive in our everyday lives. The observation of declining discount rates in experimental settings has led many to promote hyperbolic discounting over standard exponential discounting as the preferred descriptive model of intertemporal choice. In this paper, I develop a new framework that directly models the intertemporal utility ...
متن کاملHyperbolic Discounting: An Experimental Analysis
In this paper we elicit preferences for discounting via experimental techniques. We then estimate a general speci cation of discounting that nests exponential and hyperbolic discounting, as well as various forms of present bias, including quasihyperbolic discounting. The data strongly favor a speci cation with a small present bias in the form of a xed cost, of the order of $4 on average across...
متن کاملNAIVETÉ ABOUT TEMPTATION AND SELF-CONTROL: FOUNDATIONS FOR NAIVE QUASI-HYPERBOLIC DISCOUNTING By
We introduce and characterize a recursive model of dynamic choice that accommodates naiveté about present bias. The model incorporates costly self-control in the sense of Gul and Pesendorfer (2001) to overcome the technical hurdles of the Strotz representation. The important novel condition is an axiom for naiveté. We first introduce appropriate definitions of absolute and comparative naiveté f...
